It started with ropes and nets for ships….

It all began on the Reeperbahn—not on the world-famous entertainment district in nearby Hamburg, but in the rope hall (the "Reeperbahn") of net-maker and master rope-maker Claus Hinrich Michelsen. With a pioneering spirit and foresight, Michelsen founded his rope company—the origin of the "Little Cloud"—in 1793 in the fishing village of Grohn near Bremen. His children and grandchildren were so adept at exploiting the boom in industrialisation that the company floated on the stock market at the end of the 19th century.

In 1924, the Bremen businessman Fritz Tecklenborg acquired the majority of the shares and remained the owner of the rope and carpet factory until his death in 1964. With a good feel for the market, the company had already begun producing carpets made of Sisal and Wool (both organic materials) in addition to rope in 1947.

A hundred and fifty year’s experience in producing hard wearing fabrics. The DNA of which has evolved into today’s vast selection of bath rugs, which are designed to last a minimum of 10-12 years.

Inspiration on a plane

A brainwave from managing director Günter Brinkmann in 1968 gave the carpets from Bremen a decisive boost: On a plane ride, Brinkmann invented the (Kleine Wolke) "Little Cloud" bath rug range– fluffy and pure, with a gold-plated logo. "Little Cloud" quickly became a success story: in addition to bath rugs, new product categories were created that offered everything from shower curtains, towels to soap dispensers, making customer’s bathrooms both beautiful and practical. "Little Cloud" conquered the market!

As the market leader in central and eastern Europe, the design team at Kleine Wolke develops new designs and color combinations every year, that allow consumers to restyle their bathrooms, whatever decor they have.

With over 100 employees at its headquarters in the City of Bremen and its subsidiary in Mägenwil, Switzerland, Kleine Wolke serves approximately 5,000 customers in 40 countries.
